Root vegetables are some of the most low-maintenance crops you can grow.
All varieties in this bundle should be direct sown outdoors.
Plant in early spring or late summer for a fall harvest.
Prepare your soil well: loose, deep, well-draining soil produces the best roots.
☀️ Sun Requirements
Most root crops prefer 6 or more hours per day of full sun.
They can tolerate partial shade, but growth may be slower.
Radishes and turnips are the most flexible and will still produce well with 4–5 hours of light.
💧 Watering
Consistent moisture is important for smooth, crack-free roots.
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry and aim for deep, even watering rather than frequent shallow watering.
Inconsistent moisture causes beets and carrots to crack.
✂️ Harvesting
Harvest root crops before they become too large. Oversized roots can become woody and lose their flavor.
Radishes are ready in as little as 20–30 days. Carrots, beets, and turnips typically take 50–70 days.
Gently pull or use a garden fork to loosen the soil before lifting.
🧺 Storing Your Harvest
Root vegetables store exceptionally well. Remove leafy tops after harvest to extend storage life.
Carrots, beets, and turnips keep for several weeks in the refrigerator or up to a few months in a cool, dark, humid space.
Radishes keep in the fridge for 1–2 weeks.
